Why don't we use this space?
You may wonder why we
keep our website at a mere 750 pixels wide when monitors currently
in use are at least 1024 pixels across and usually much wider.
COMFORT
To avoid "content overload" and to assist with ease of
reading, we would have to break up the layout into vertical columns
if we used more width. You'd end up scrolling up/down anyway to
view an entire column's content. And then you'd have to scan across
to figure out which columns deserve attention.
We think
it's easier to have just the one manageable column with a simple
flow from top to bottom.
WINDOWING
The whole point of windows is that each application does not have
to use the full screen area. Many users prefer to keep the browser
window narrower than the full desktop, adjusting the width to define
their own comfort level.
In this
sense, grabbing a full 750 pixels for ourselves is a bit cheeky,
but we're traditional control freaks when it comes to page layout.
PORTRAIT
VIEW
Rotate a typical 19" widescreen monitor to portrait mode and
you get only 900 pixels across. The luxurious vertical resolution
of 1440 pixels is great for viewing web pages without lots of scrolling,
but viewing a webpage that's wider than 900 pixels is then quite annoying.
EXCEPTIONS
Our Catalog does allow content to expand across the full browser
window, but only when displaying product names. Our product names
can be LONG (up to 100 characters) and you may choose to view product
tables and descriptions with the names running across fewer lines
of text. But it IS your choice: 750 pixels is still all you need
to see everything, just expand the browser width if you're more
comfortable with a wider view.
WHY
750 PIXELS?
OK we admit it, this has nothing to do with ergonomics. It's based
purely on the old 800 x 600 CRT monitor size. Maybe 630 pixels would
be best, or 913. We really don't know.
