| Business
continuity is worth more than the cost of thorough backup solutions.
Once clients recognise how much their business depends on the
information in their IT systems, the data security and speed
of recovery provided by good Storage technology becomes indispensable. |
 |
| Small
business users, such as accounting firms, art design houses,
dentists, lawyers and real-estate brokers, often store years
of valuable client information on their PC hard drives
without any backup or redundancy. This may result in
the loss of all business data and cause a big disaster
for the user. With the popularity of broadband Internet, business
activity continues to move online. Thus, the need to move, manage,
access, copy, back up, protect and store data is more important
than ever. The increasing popularity of residential broadband
and digital multimedia such as music, video and still
images contribute to a growing need for high-capacity storage
and backup systems at home. What price can we put
on photographs of special occasions with our loved ones? How
long would it take to replace hundreds of downloaded music tracks? |

The
Hard Truth about Hard Drive Failure
In Compucon's component failure statistical analysis, Hard Disk
Drives emerge as a top killer. Seagate has published MTBF of
500 thousand Power On Hours for most IDE and SATA models and
double for SCSI. MTBF is Mean Time Between Failure. Literally,
Seagate says a SATA drive will fail every 500,000 hours (200
years) of use in a perfect environment during office hours only.
The figure is a design target and is established by laboratory
simulations since it is not possible to test a new HDD model
for 200 years before releasing it for sale. We have asked Seagate
about the failure rate in real life use. There is no direct
answer, but the replies have helped us establish by inference
that 3% failure is common. HDD failures do exist and
it is highly advisable to protect against the impact of data
loss. |
